Des'ree

I've been extremely fortunate to pursue many of my dreams, including publishing poetry, starting my own foundation, serving as a Global Goals Ambassador with the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) for Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), creating Three Panels Press (a literary magazine), and more.
B.S. in Literature, Media, and Communication:
M.A. in Gerontology:
PhD in Communication Studies:
Research Report - During my undergraduate studies at Georgia Tech, I applied for and received one of the President's Undergraduate Research Grants to analyze a data dashboard called "Communities Who Know." I provided suggestions on improvements for public use.
Sex and Aging Article - I produced an article for my "Communicating Science and Technology" class, in which I interviewed several professionals in the field of gerontology and elders. These interviews centered on the topic of the psychological and physiological impact of intimacy on the aging population.
Senior Thesis - During my last semester at Georgia Tech, I completed a senior thesis on the portrayal of Black women in contemporary media. The history of tropes and discussion of women media moguls are some topics covered within this thesis. I used literature from scholars such as Donald Bogle, Bell Hooks, and Patricia Hill Collins.

Some of my interests as a gerontologist include intimacy and aging, the mental health of older adults, and communicating to underserved populations. I interned with the Division of Aging Services (DAS) in Atlanta, where I studied policies impacting older adults and helped to establish an interdisciplinary policy council. I also spearheaded my own project at DAS about the best methods for communicating in rural areas of Georgia. For this research, I worked with Area Agencies on Aging in rural areas of Georgia.
I have also presented my poster during graduate school and presented at the Georgia Gerontological Society (2021 & 2022). I've co-authored publications. I also presented on sex, aging, and intimacy at the Social Gerontology Conference (2022). I have worked for two non-profits that provide aging services.
I had a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study abroad while at Georgia Tech. I spent the summer of 2019 traveling Europe through the Oxford Program. I traveled to about 9 different places (Paris, Rome, Prague, Munich, etc.) and took 4 courses. I studied art and music for the first five weeks. During that time, I went to several museums and opera houses. I attended the opera, Nabucco, that summer. I spent most of my time (six weeks) at Mansfield College in Oxford, UK. It was an amazing and unforgettable summer.
